=Evolution of sex-chromosomes=

The Munich Graduate Program for Evolution, Ecology and Systematics
(EES) invites applications for the international EES Summer School on
'the Evolution of Sex Chromosomes' held at Frauenchiemsee (80 km east of Munich) from 14 - 19 September 2008. 

The 5-day Summer School will consist of lectures, discussions and
exercises provided by the invited teachers as well as oral and/or
poster contributions by the more advanced student participants.
Arrival of participants is scheduled for Sunday 14 September evening,
departure for Friday 19 September early afternoon.

The instructors will cover theoretical aspects of sex chromosome evolution and present empirical results from diverse systems including plants, insects and birds. Specific topics will include the origin of sex chromosomes, the expression and molecular evolution of sex-linked genes, and the role of sex chromosomes in speciation.

===Location===
Location: [http://www.frauenwoerth.de/ Frauenwörth Chiemsee]. This abbey is on the Fraueninsel, which is connected to the town Prien with a small ferry. Prien is on the
Munich-Salzburg train connection. You can therefore fly to Munich or to Salzburg. 

Participants will share rooms. Towels and sheets are provided.

===Applications===
The summer school is open to students at the PhD and Master/advanced
Diploma levels. The course language will be English. Students who are
involved in research related to the topic of the summer school are
encouraged to prepare short oral contributions or posters highlighting
their research interests and/or achievements.

Thanks to support from the Volkswagen Foundation, the University of
Munich's EES program will cover costs for housing and meals during
the Summer School. Participants will have to cover their travel
expenses and must pay a 50 Euro registration fee. A limited amount of
funding is available to partly subsidize travel expenses for students
from the most distant localities.

Applicants should provide a full CV, a statement about your research
interests/current projects (max. half page), a statement about why
you want to attend the Summer School, explicitly addressing how you
expect to benefit and what you can contribute (max. half page).
Application deadline is 24th of June.

===Some other info===
The summer school is organized by the EES (evolution, ecology and systematics) program in Munich for the second time now. It will take place from the 14th till the 19th of September 2008 (Sunday night till Friday afternoon). The organizers are John Parsch (main organizer), Bart Kempenaers, Susanne Renner and Pleuni Pennings. Teachers are asked to contribute with a lecture and an exercise (computer exercise, literature discussion, or anything else). We will spend one afternoon on a hike in the nearby Alps. Participating students (master and PhD level) who work on a related project are encouraged to give a 10 min talk about their work. Last year we had 18 students (about half from Germany and half from elsewhere).
