General Overview
- The first semester consists of obligatory introductory courses and tutorials that will follow the course of a normal semester, lasting around 20 weeks. Take a look at the First Semester Schedule to get a better idea of what which classes you have to take and the approximate duration on a per-week basis.
- You can download the Rules for Obligatory EES Courses.
- Subsequent semesters follow a block schedule, with a given class lasting anywhere from 2-5 weeks. For more information, go to Elective Courses page.
- Keep in mind that after your first semester, you will always have 1-3 mandatory EES courses (non-block courses - e.g. Seminar & Discussion, Skills) on Monday afternoons. Thus, you will notice that none of the EES block courses take place on Monday afternoons.

Planning for Your Upcoming Semesters
Winter Semester Courses 2010/2011: to be announced
By the first day of each semester, all second and third semester students must turn in the Course Signup Form to the EES coordinator.
The Online Course Catalog - "Vorlesungsverzeichnis"
- For a complete schedule of courses, along with exact times and locations for each course, you will need to log on to the online course catalog, or Vorlesungsverzeichnis. Information on upcoming semesters is usually available approximately two months before the semester starts. You do not need a password to log on to this site.
- To navigate to EES courses, click the following links in order: "Vorlesungsverzeichnis" - "Facultät für Biologie" - "Veranstaltungen der Facultät" - "Master's Program in Evolution, Ecology, and Systematics." Then select your semester, and the module you are interested in. See below to learn more about the modules.
- You may also be interested in some of the courses offered to Diplom students. To navigate to these courses, click on the following links: "Vorlesungsverzeichnis" - "Facultät für Biologie" - "Veranstaltungen der Facultät" - "Diplom". You can then browse courses under the headings "Ökologie und Evolutionsbiologie," "Systemische Biologie," or "Zoologie."
- There is no guarantee that Diplom courses will be offered in English, but this often depends on which students are interested in the course - if the majority of students are English-speakers, the course may be taught in English. Thus, if you are interested in a course but do not speak fluent German, do not hesitate to contact the instructor and ask about the language of instruction, even if it is listed as German in the Vorlesungsverzeichnis!
- If you want EES credit for a course not listed under EES, you must obtain EES approval beforehand, and the instructor must give you a number grade. To navigate to these courses, click on the following links: "Vorlesungsverzeichnis" - "Facultät für Biologie" - "Veranstaltungen der Facultät" - "Diplom". You can then browse courses under the headings "Ökologie und Evolutionsbiologie," "Systemische Biologie," or "Zoologie."
Credit Breakdown
- In total, you must obtain 120 ECTS (or "European Credit Transfer System") credits to graduate from the program. There are a total of 11 modules that must be completed for the degree program (see below to understand which courses and activities are involved in which modules).
- In order to receive credit for a block course, you must receive a number grade. The Skills Courses and the Excursion are evaluated on a pass/fail basis.
