The implementation of the EESLMU graduate program is planned in several steps. In 2006/07, all new courses will pass a trial run within the old Diploma program. In 2007/08 the full Master’s and PhD programs will start for new applicants. Remaining diploma students will be integrated into this scheme. By the end of 2009, the first students will receive their Master degree.

Summer term 2006:
- Organization of diploma students with major subject in evolution, ecology, and systematics and EESLMU PhD students to form a provisional EESLMU graduate program.
- Start of the mentor system.
- Formation of the Scientific Boards of the program.
- Appointment of the EESLMU program coordinator and the program secretary by summer 2006.
- Construction of a provisional program website.
- Work on the Master’s curriculum.
- In summer break 2006, symposium on „Inference of evolutionary processes in natural populations“ organized by Beate Nürnberger (independent VW application).
Winter term 2006/2007:
- IRT1 trial run with EESLMU Diploma students around the 7th semester: lab rotation with complementing course on academic writing, reviewed lab report. Counted as research practical + advanced practical in the diploma curriculum.
- IRT3 trial run with EESLMU Diploma students starting their thesis: students write grant proposal after first 3 months of (full-time) research, first grant money awarded.
- S&D seminar trial run: seminar according to the S&D scheme offered by three EESLMU faculty members.
- First student seminar speaker invited by PhD students.
- Formation of PhD peer groups, start of half-year progress reports.
Summer term 2007:
- First EESLMU workshop in spring 2007. Focus on the Master’s curriculum (with feedback from the first trial runs) to start the accreditationing process.
- IRT2 trial run with EESLMU major subject students around the 8th semester (independent project with research paper and poster). Implementation into diploma curriculum as IRT1.
- First EESLMU excursion organized by 5 faculty members.
- In summer break 2007 first official EESLMU summer school.
- In late summer, first EESLMU Master’s conference: Talks and posters by Diploma students, welcome of first real Master’s students. Prize awards for best Diploma and PhD students.
Winter term 2007/2008:
- Full start of the EESLMU Master’s program. 7th semester Diploma students are fully assimilated into the program (transfer of the crediting will be worked out and made possible).
- Full start of the EESLMU PhD program for new PhD students. Advanced PhD students are included into peer group scheme, but have no course requirements.
Summer term 2008:
- First full second semester of the Master’s program.
- Second EESLMU workshop, focus on revisions of the curricula.
- Second EESLMU summer school, for the first time at the Max Planck Seewiesen.
- Second EESLMU conference in late summer.
Winter term 2008/2009:
- First third semester of the Master’s with grant writing.
- First Master’s student seminar speaker.
Summer term 2009:
- First Master theses, Master graduates, and “PhD direct” students.
- Third EESLMU workshop, summer school, and conference.
- From winter 2009/2010: no further Diploma students, end of the transition phase.
