EESLMU board of directors

The board of directors consists of six people: Susanne Foitzik, Susanne Renner, Wolfgang Stephan, Sebastian Diehl, John Parsch and Bart Kempenaers.

For the daily administrative issues of the EESLMU graduate program the coordinating team is assisted by a scientific program coordinator and a program secretary.

EESLMU program coordinator

Pleuni Pennings is the program coordinator.

For the success of the graduate program, it will be important to have a person in charge who sees this success as his/her main responsibility. This role will be taken by a scientific program coordinator, who supervises the practical implementation of the program and functions as a central interface between students and faculty. He/she reports to the director of graduate studies and has the following duties:

  • ensure the implementation of decisions by the EESLMU boards,
  • advise the curriculum committee with feedback from students and faculty,
  • make concrete suggestions for the development of the curriculum,
  • organize the EESLMU workshops and conferences (together with the secretary),
  • assist in the organization of the summer school,
  • manage the program’s webpage and advertisement,
  • initiate and assist student self-organization (seminar speakers, etc),
  • supervise the PhD student peer groups,
  • keep track of thesis committees,
  • assist all students and faculty in case of problems,
  • communicate with VW and oversee the evaluation of the program.

For these duties, the program coordinator needs to have first-hand experience with biological training and research, but should not be involved in teaching him- or herself. The program coordinator position will be half-time (20 hours per week). A PhD in biology or a related field is required.

EESLMU program secretary

Katrin Kümpfbeck is the secretary.

The director of graduate studies and the program coordinator are supported by the program secretary with the following main duties:

  • management of the budgets,
  • assistance in the organization of summer schools, conferences, and workshops,
  • handling of applications to the program,
  • handling of course certificates, master thesis, etc,
  • maintenance of a semester course list and an internal message board,
  • contact point for all students of the program with administrative problems.

The secretary position will be for 10 hours per week (1/4 position).

Student self-organization

The students of the program (Master and PhD) are organized in Volvox. See [http:www.eeslmu.de/wiki]. Volvox organizes scientific and social events. A regular scientific event funded by EESLMU and organized by its student club are the EESLMU student seminars with invited international speakers.
