Molecular biodiversity and ecology of Indonesian sponges
Knowledge of geographic ranges, species delimitation and ecological factor that control species distributions is essential for the effective management and conservation of marine ecosystems. Indonesian sponges still pose a considerable challenge to marine scientists working in this region. Much of the sponge fauna remains insufficiently known and this would be a disadvantage for management purposes, especially in unique habitats. In this project, the study will include: sponge biodiversity and ecology in a certain area, taxonomy of several common species, including some new species description, also genetic structuring of several different sponge populations from different habitat within an area (small spatial scale) and from other adjacent regions in Indonesia (larger spatial scale).
