Order of the Process

  • In Germany, you have to do all this logistical stuff in a specific order. Below is the recommended order:
  1. Find housing
  2. Anmeldung (Registration of Address)
  3. Opening a German Bank Account
  4. Obtain German Health Insurance
  5. Matriculate at LMU (see, Enrollment)
  6. Obtain your residency permit
  7. Obtain your tax card (if you are going to work)

Registering Address

  • Within 8 days of arriving in Germany and finding a place to stay, you will need to register your address (Anmeldung) at the Kreisverwaltungsreferat (KVR).
  • To do this, you will need to bring the following with you:
    • Valid Passport or ID
    • Visa, if required for entry into Germany.

You will recieve a piece of paper from the office; this is your Anmeldung. Keep this as you will need it for your residency permit. This procedure takes place at the ground floor of the KVR and the waiting areas are divided by the first letter of your last name.

Residence Permit

Within 3 months of moving to Munich (or when your visa to enter the country first expires), you will need to get your residence permit (Aufenthaltstitel). To do this paperwork, go to the building´s first floor, section for Students and Researchers (Studenten und Gastwissenschaflter).

You will need to bring the following with you to the office:

  • A completed residency permit form (Antrag auf Erteilung bzw. Verlaengerung eines Aufenthaltstitel). You can get this online, here.
  • A valid passport or ID
  • A valid student visa, if from countries where this is required.
  • 1 biometric compatible passport photo
  • Proof of enrollment/matriculation at Ludwigs-Maximillians Universitaet (LMU) in Munich. Bring the sheet of paper that has your student ID (Studentnachweis) and matriculation certificates (Zulassungsbescheinigung).
  • Proof of German health insurance. For this, you will need a Krankenversicherungsbescheinigung, which can be obtained at one of the 6 national Krankenkassen. Usually, this proof is specially for the Residence Permit. That is, at the Health Insurance office, you will receive two proofs, one for the Residence Permit and another one for the rest of procedures.
  • An adminstration fee of 60,- euro
  • Proof of financial support (Finanzierungsnachweis). The legal minimum is currently 7.908,- euro, but rises each year.
    • Forms of valid financial support include: proof of a fellowship or scholarship award by a German organization or an organization recognized by the German authorities, or a bank statement from your checking or savings account indicating that you have funds in the appropriate amount for one year.
    • If you are willing to work, you can also present a letter of the employer stating the expected income per month. If your income will be, let's say, 400 euro/month, that represents a total of 4.800 euro per year, therefore, a bank statement with 2.200 euro will be enough to reach the 7.000 euro.
