Personal Statement
My interest in Biology originates in a fascination for all the different landscapes and forms I have discovered on journeys. I want to understand the coherences of nature and how these different ecosystems work. This led me to the study of Biology, which I began three years ago at the LMU in Munich. After completing my basic studies I did an ecological internship in Ecuador where I worked in reserves of the foundation Jatun Sacha for forest conservation and organic farming. For my main studies I have chosen Ecology as my major, with Anthropology and Geography as minors. I have specialized in Ecology because I want to learn about aquatic ecology, limnic and marine systems, but also about biodiversity hot spots like tropical rain forests or coral reefs. Another topic I am interested in is environmental problems and how they can be solved. I took part in a remote sensing course last semester, which showed me that remote sensing is a good method to use for various ecological questions and problems. In my future work I would like to combine these methods with my ecological research.
I decided to take part in courses of the EES Master program because I think it is a good opportunity to get new experience in scientific and social aspects and to improve my English. The Master program offers new courses such as the presentation seminar or the scientific writing course, which are very important and useful for the rest of the studies. I also like that there is a Systematics part. By the small number of students, the mentoring is very intensive. It is also a big benefit to get new contacts to your fellow students who are mainly coming from overseas. Meeting new people, especially from foreign countries, always means that you get to know new views and perspectives.
