Goals

The goal of the IRT 3 trial is that students are better prepared for their Diplomarbeit (and later their Master's thesis) and get some first experience in grantwriting. The money that you ask for should be used for one or more of the following goals:

  • It allows you to be more independent (for example, because you will do fieldwork on your own or visit another lab).
  • It allows you to do more innovative work than usual (for example, if you want to do a project that uses a (for the lab) new species or new technique).
  • It allows you to present your work as a talk or a poster at a meeting or a workshop.
  • It allows you to learn new skills or acquire new knowledge by visiting a course.
  • It allows you to plan your future (for example if you visit a meeting to find a lab to do your PhD thesis).

Who can participate

You can participate if

  • you are a biology student at the LMU,
  • you are a (Hauptfach-)student in Ecology, Evolution or Systematics
  • or if you have a different Hauptfach, but your Diplomarbeit focuses on an ecological, evolutionary or systematic topic,
  • your Diplomarbeit has not yet started, or you are still in the first two months of the Diplomarbeit.

The rules

  • The grant proposal should describe your research plans for your Diplomarbeit or for a part of your Diplomarbeit.
  • The grant proposal should follow the format given below.
  • Your supervisor should give you feedback on the proposal so that you can revise it.
  • Your supervisor should write a short e-mail to the EES board of directors in which she or he describes which parts of the proposal are his/her contributions and which parts are yours.
  • In the proposal you can ask from money from the EES IRT fund. This money can be used for, e.g., fieldtrips, courses, meetings (see Goals).

* Note: you cannot ask for money for consumables.

  • You can ask for up to 1000 Euros.

The deadlines

  • Proposals should be handed in within 2 months from the start of your Diplomarbeit.
  • The EES board will decide on whether and which amount of money you will receive based on the amount requested and the criteria below.
  • Decisions will usually be made within 6 weeks.
