From now on, every year the academic activities of the Ecology, Evolution and Systematics Graduate School at the Ludwig Maximilian University (EES LMU) Munich, will start with a conference. The 2007 conference hosts two international speakers, four students who have won the EES prizes for best PhD thesis and best Diplomarbeit, and an award winning movie. The conference takes place in the Biozentrum in Martinsried.

Jonathan Bollback will talk about "Experimental evolution: the genetics of adaptation, parallel evolution and interference".

He obtained his B.Sc., Biology at the University of Maryland at College Park, USA, while both his M.Sc., Evolutionary Genetics and his Ph. D., Evolutionary Genetics were obtained at the University of Rochester, USA. He's currently carrying out his Postdoctoral Training at the Institute of Biology and Bioinformatics Centre University of Copenhagen, Denmark. Barbara Hellriegel will talk about "Spread of Innovations in Animals: ecological versus social influences".

She studied Mathematics with Biology as minor subject at the University of Heidelberg, Germany and the Free University of Berlin Germany, where she obtained her Diploma (M.Sc.) in Mathematics. Her Ph.D. in Zoology, took place at the University of Basel, Switzerland, to then become a Postdoc and Senior Research Associate at the Zoological Museum and Zoological Institute of the University of Zürich, Switzerland.
