EESLMU Summer School 2009

This year’s summer school covered theoretical aspects of host-parasite evolution and discussed empirical approaches for studying coevolution. Specific topics included the evolution of virulence and resistance, local adaptation and spatial structuring in host-parasite systems, and the molecular signature of coevolution. Mike Boots (Sheffield), Jukka Jokela (ETH Zurich), David Nash (Copenhagen) and Peter Tiffin (Minnesota) were the instructors, who taught 24 participants: 6 from the LMU, 2 from other German universities and 16 students coming from 11 different countries. Everybody enjoyed the great work atmosphere and the quality of the scientific discussion!

Third annual EES conference

At the 2009 conference, there where two interesting talks by Manyuan Long, Chicago, and Joachim Kurtz, Münster. Additionally, the second cohort presented posters on their IRT2 project and all the students of the first cohort and several PhD students gave talks on their project. The best were awarded with an EES prize. Congratulations to Winfried Hense & Elisabeth Bolund (best PhD theses) and Rebecca Meredith & Pablo Duchen (best Master’s theses). A great event was also the graduation of the first cohort of the EES program! All the best to Pablo, Rob, Rebecca, Delsy, Ricardo and Jennifer!

Erasmus Mundus Master's Program in Evolutionary Biology (MEME)

MEME is a brand new two-year research-oriented Master's program for talented and motivated students who are interested in understanding evolution in all its facets. Five European universities are involved in this program, including the LMU; the University of Groningen, Netherlands; Uppsala University, Sweden; University of Montpellier II, France; and Harvard University, USA. Students will spend their first semester at either Groningen or Uppsala, and their second semester at the LMU or Montpellier. After that, students may choose where they want to complete their Master's research. They might select a third university, including Harvard, stay at their second university, or return to their first university. Students who decide to come to Munich will take coursework and do research in partnership with the EES Program.
